Introduction



The City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Department is seeking an energetic, enthusiastic, and creative 
PUBLIC INFORMATION SPECIALIST
who will effectively engage and assist with distributing information through social media and other internal and external communications.

The Public Information Specialist will work with the Parks and Recreation Department's Public Information Officer (PIO) to develop, implement, and maintain an effective public information program.

General Description

The Parks and Recreation Public Information Specialist provides information to the public through a variety of means including: answering constituent phone calls and e-mails, maintaining contact with the news media and social media content, on-line communication, writing and distributing news releases, delivering presentations, planning and organizing special events and developing collateral materials. Conceptualizes and produces marketing packages and communications materials. Develops partnerships with public and private entities.

Essential Functions

Develops community relations strategies to provide the public with accurate information about current and upcoming initiatives.

Develops written and visual content for various communication channels, including websites, social media platforms, and email, coordinating videography and photography, as needed.  

Conducts research, gathers information, and seeks media opportunities.  

Establishes and maintains working relationships with internal and external groups, such as local media sources, members of the public, and city employees to promote and communicate initiatives and objectives.  

Plans and coordinates programs, presentations, and special events to inform and engage the community.  

Maintains an awareness of current and planned department projects and programs to plan appropriate communication to the community.  

Responds to newsworthy events, media inquiries, and emergencies, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: Bachelor's Degree

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 3 years of experience in public relations, journalism, communications, or related field

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of this position may be considered.

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in the next phase of the recruitment process.

  • Instructions will be sent at a later date for a Written Assignment which will be due by end of day on Wednesday, July 26, 2023
  • Oral Board Interviews will be held on Thursday, August 3, 2023
Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Eligibility List. An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service Eligibility List will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:

  • 20% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 30% of your written assignment
  • 50% of your oral board interview
Selection interviews may be conducted post Civil Service Eligibility List by the Hiring Manager.

This recruitment will establish a Civil Service Eligibility List that will be utilized to fill vacancies within Parks and Recreation occurring within the next 6 months.

Veterans, Native American, or Disability preference points will be added to the final score for those that are placed on the Civil Service Eligibility List. If you qualify for preference points as outlined in the Employment Profile, you must present your documentation at the Oral Board Interviews. The DD214 must be a copy that indicates the characterization of service.
